1. Winter hiking with your dog in Kaprun: Our excursion tips

The Zell am See-Kaprun region offers plenty of ways to discover the winter landscape away from the ski slopes. Cleared winter hiking trails are particularly pleasant for dogs, allowing you to head out together with ease.

These three destinations are well worth a visit:

  • Kapruner Moos: The flat paths through the wintry landscape are ideal for leisurely walks. The roughly 1.3 km meadow path from the clubhouse towards TAUERN SPA is particularly beautiful.
  • Lake Zell: The lakeside promenade in Zell am See offers wonderful views of the wintry lake and the surrounding mountains. Ideal for long walks with your four-legged companion.
  • Filzmoosweg in Kaprun: A flat winter hiking trail of around 1.4 km, perfect for a relaxed loop through the snow-covered landscape.

Our tip: Check current trail conditions before you set off. Not every hiking trail is accessible in snow and ice. The length of your tour should also suit your dog’s fitness level and tolerance of the cold.

2. Paw care in winter: How to protect your dog from snow and road salt

Snow is great fun for many dogs. However, ice, road salt and grit can be uncomfortable for sensitive paws. Small clumps of snow can form, especially between the toes, which can press or rub when walking.

With a few simple measures, your dog will stay well protected even in winter:

  • Before the walk: Check the paws and, if needed, use a suitable paw balm.
  • On the go: Carefully remove snow and ice from between the toes. Watch out for sudden limping or frequent lifting of a paw.
  • After the walk: Rinse off any road salt with lukewarm water and dry the paws thoroughly.
  • In very cold weather: Shorten walks and plan several shorter rounds instead.

A towel for wet fur and a warm blanket should also be part of your luggage. Dogs with short coats, little undercoat or low tolerance of the cold may benefit from a suitable dog coat in low temperatures.

3. Winter holiday with your dog: What to keep in mind in Kaprun

To keep your shared winter adventures safe and enjoyable, you should be aware of a few rules.

In Kaprun, regulations apply to keeping dogs secured in public spaces. We recommend keeping your four-legged companion on a lead at all times when out walking. Dogs are not allowed on cross-country ski trails in Kaprun. Ski slopes and busy toboggan runs are also not suitable walking routes.

It is also particularly important to keep enough distance from wild animals. In winter, deer and other forest animals must conserve their energy reserves. So please stay on the designated paths and do not let your dog chase any animals.

What should you pack for a winter holiday with your dog? In addition to a lead, food and a dog blanket, we recommend a paw towel, a water bottle with bowl, waste bags and, if needed, paw protection or a dog coat.
